RYA TRAINING
Intermediate Day Navigation
- Aim:
- To teach navigation skills in a powerboat by day.
- Duration:
- Two days
- Instructor to student ratio:
- 1:3 or 1:6 using two vessels
- Times:
- The start time is 09:30 with an anticipated finish at around 17:00
Course Information
The Intermediate course is a practical course, however due to the navigation skills that need to be taught we must spend half of the first day and a small amount of the second day in the classroom.
At Guardian Marine the culmination of the course is that each student will be responsible for the navigation and safe passage of the vessel during their own section of a 30 to 50 mile journey.
The course will be conducted in our 7.5m Cobra RIB with a Mercury 150hp Optimax.
Pre course requirements
- All students should be competent to the standard of Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate.
- It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operator's certificate.
Please note
If you are a bit rusty with your own boat handling skills arrange to get some
practice before attending this course. Although you will be taught some new boat
handling skills, this course is about teaching you navigation skills not basic
boat handling.
What to bring with you on the course
Lifejackets and waterproofs are supplied.
- Warm clothing.
- Suitable footwear for being on board a high speed craft such as deck shoes, sailing boots (not gardening wellies please) or old trainers.
- If you wish to use your own foul weather gear, please bring it. You may also bring your own lifejacket but it must conform to EN 396, be in good condition and have a minimum buoyancy of 150 newtons.
- A change of clothing. In case of emergency.
Lunch Arrangements
Lunch arrangements are usually made on the morning of the course as a group decision.
The options are:
- In our canteen (Mon to Fri).
- In the clubhouse at the marina.
- In the Ship & Trades pub next to the marina.
- On board the boat (sandwiches and snacks obtainable from the Co-op at the marina).
